Antaratma: The Evolution and Fabrics
At Antaratma, we were clear about working with fabrics that are naturally dyed. During research, we stumbled upon something even better - fabrics dyed using Ayurvedic herbs. We chose premium organic cotton as the base for the process. The fabric was then dyed using a potion–Kashayam, it is called in Malayalam–with ingredients including plants, roots, flowers, seeds, barks, leaves, natural minerals, and herbs. The process also uses natural mordants for fixing shades and natural gums to ensure the goodness of herbs hold on to the fabric.
While we were figuring how to source high-quality linen, we came across Hemp, considered a grade better than linen. Sustainably derived from the Cannabis sativa L plant, Hemp boasts organic growth, antimicrobial properties, and a natural softness that deepens with every wash. The Hemp fabrics we source, however, are not naturally dyed, but we ensure no harmful chemicals are used in the process. Azo-free dyes are used to dye Hemp.
We fell in love with the beautiful colours of the Hemp fabric. The colours were so good it compelled us to envision Antaratma garments in it, and let go of the idea that it should all be white.
The particular variety of Hemp that we source is versatile. It is equally good to make garments like shirts, tops, jumpsuits, playsuits and dresses, as well as trousers, blazers and shackets. The fabric feels heavenly on skin, drapes well, and is extremely breathable.
We also zeroed in on Tencel, a brand of Lyocell and Modal fibers made from wood derived from sustainably-managed forests. It became a narrative of strength and softness in harmony, certifiably safe, gentle on the skin, and biodegradable.
It is a man-made fibre, but with natural origin and sustainable manufacturing and dyeing processes. Tencel is ultra-lightweight. Actor Gul Panag, having used our Tencel shirts, crowned it 'Ultimate'.
It was during our visits to different fabric manufacturers in Delhi that we fell in love with Orange Fibre fabric, an innovative textile crafted from citrus by-products. It became a symbol of transforming waste into fashion, offering a unique blend of style and eco-friendly ethos. Orange fabric drapes extremely well, is super soft, and has a sheen. It looks and feels luxurious.
As we reflect on our journey, each thread woven into the fabric of Antaratma tells a story of conscious choices, sustainable practices, and a commitment to redefine the fashion landscape. Our evolution is not just a timeline; it's a conscious stride towards a future where fashion harmonises with the planet, reflecting the beauty of mindful living.
